The Friday 5 : Ellen Swalley

The Friday 5 : Ellen Swalley

Each week we are highlighting someone at Mission who will answer 5 questions! Our church may be growing, but getting to know your neighbors should never be hard to do.

Ellen Swalley

The Facts: I work at the Swalley household, where I'm raising two little girls, Emerson and Shay (who are 15 months apart) to love and serve Jesus. I also nanny my infant nephew four days a week, and I also operate a photography business {shameless plug: Red Sweater Photography} where I'm trying to raise money for our future adoption. I love to watch and play sports, and believe this is the year for the Cubs. For reals. I also love any DIY projects...which is why our garage is filled with lumber, paint, thrifted furniture and other things that most people throw away but I try to salvage.

1. In one word how would your friends describe you?

Honest. When I engage in authentic relationships, I value honesty in others above all else, and conduct myself in that way as well. That means I don't really beat around the bush, I'll tell you what I'm thinking (hopefully with grace and humility!) and conduct myself in (prayerfully) honorable ways and value that in others as well!

2. What is playing on your radio, iPod, etc?

The radio in our home is at the mercy of our daughter, Emerson, who loves to dance and loves dance music. So currently Uptown Funk is the song of the day, every day, in our house. She requests a little Shake it Off by Taylor Swift every now and then to change it up a little. To spiritualize it, we also listen to Hillsong, Phil Wickham, Passion and gospel music :)

3. Who is the person who has had the biggest impact on your life?

My husband Michael. {caution: mushy words ahead} I was single far longer than I ever wanted to be, and for some reason, he chose to pursue me and marry me. He is the most tangible proof of God's grace in my life. I have never met someone who thinks the best of people all the time, loves people so deeply, and is as loyal as my husband. He has a kind word to say about anyone he meets, and always, always sees the positive of situations. He loves Jesus and loves His word, and is one of the smartest people I know. He has impacted my life by how he lives his, and he also gave me two beautiful babies that we get to raise together. My life will never be the same because of him!

4. Your last meal on earth would be where?

My last meal on earth would be anywhere my family is, I'd want to be with the people I love the most. And I would have the Chicago Sampler Special (totally just made that up). A Giordano's deep dish pizza, a Gene & Jude's hot dog with fries, a Portillo's beef sandwich (dipped) with a chocolate cake shake. I mean, it's the last meal, right? Go big and go home :)

5. What is one thing you love about Mission?

How genuine everyone is…people at Mission truly love the Lord, love each other, and love to serve, and at the same time are not perfect, so its why the Swalley's fit in well there and love it so much!
