Last month at Mission U we engaged in some fascinating conversation with Dr. Mike Giuliano. I asked Dr. Giuliano if he would continue the conversation here, exclusively on the Wire. Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll reveal some of the key questions we had for Dr. Giuliano, his responses will be in italics. Lets get started.
How do you balance listening to someone's story and loving them without compromising or weakening truth?
There are some things where we cannot honestly think there are intelligent, caring, moral individuals on the other side. The morality of the Holocaust, for example, is not something I would suggest that we need to give the other side a complete hearing. But the fact is that most things others believe do not fall in that category. And so giving them the gift of a complete hearing, listening to others as we would want others to listen to us, examining our own views as we hear the views of others, is not compromise. It is serving others and it is displaying the humility we are called to display. And on top of all of that, such listening may earn us the right to be seriously heard by the other.
