Last month at Mission U we engaged in some fascinating conversation with Dr. Mike Giuliano. I asked Dr. Giuliano if he would continue the conversation here, exclusively on the Wire. Over the course of the next two weeks, I’ll reveal some of the key questions we had for Dr. Giuliano, his responses will be in italics. We asked.....

But Jesus said that if they hated me they will hate us so doesn't persecution from the world authenticate our faith and message?

In my view, this is one of the most misunderstood and misused verses in Scripture.  If we really meant this verse as a standalone truth, then why not do everything in our power to get people to hate us and persecute us?  Paul said “let our words be gentle,” and “as much as is possible, live in peace with all men,” just to name a few.  I am of the firm conviction that while it may be true that the world will hate certain things we believe, these days it is usually the way we communicate what we believe that causes them to hate us.  We are arrogant, we force stuff on people who aren’t interested in hearing it, we don’t open up to the possibility that our perception of truth may need a little refining every now and then.  Scripture is perfect and without error, but we are fallible and can see things “darkly.”
